Match Report by Titans
They say the sign of champions is winning when you don't play well. If this is at all true, then London Romans may still be in the race for the title after this unconvincing win over Outwest.
Expectations for the match were high, despite notable absentees Jones, MOTM from the previous game and Kennedy. With the return of Kerrigan at centre back, a new look midfield was formed of Gio, Billy, captain Oliver (finally playing in his rightful position) and Dales, who was handed his first start in his favoured position of right midfield. With Rich and former captain Liam, making his first start of the season after a long stint out injured, commanding the forward line, this attack looked potent, on paper at least.
This attack did not disappoint. For the first 10 minutes of the game, Titans struggled to escape their own half, with wave upon wave of Romans bombarding the hosts' defence. Romans were rewarded for their lightning start when a long throw fell to the feet of Rich, who neatly planted the ball in the bottom corner of the net. It could have been worse for Titans when Dales burst through the defence, only to be tripped. Penalty. Unfortunately, Dales' enthusiasm got the better of his composure, resulting in the penalty being embarrassingly ballooned over the bar.
The momentum was still with the visitors. Intricate passing in the midfield, who looked like they had played together for years, created several more chances, with the Romans full-backs also contributing to the attacking effort. Dales and Liam were among those denied by some breathtaking goalkeeping, before Dales managed to open his account for the afternoon. Some wonderful passing led to Liam feeding Dales on the edge of the area, and this time, the winger could make no mistake.
This theme continued throughout the majority of the first half, with Titans only managing the occasional trip into the visitors' half. With Oliver the creative force and Billy doing the dirty work behind the scenes, the visitors had a dominant grip on the midfield. Time and again, tidy passing moves created half chances for the Romans.
But the Romans were not to run away with the match. As the visitors pushed to grab a third which would undoubtedly wrap up the three points, they were caught on the counter. With Kerrigan horribly isolated at the back, the hosts' man-mountain was free to slot past the Romans goalkeeper.
The second half told a much different story. An injured Masa was replaced by Geoff, forcing Oliver to left back and destroying the momentum and midfield dominance the Romans had enjoyed in the first 45. The dependable midfield began to look shaky and it wasn't long before an uncharacteristic mistake from Billy, dispossessed on the edge of his own area, led to an unfortunate equalising own goal from Kerrigan.
But the Romans weren't to be denied victory. The frontline was still firing and a run from Oliver led to a free kick 25 yards out. Dales was on the end of the delivery from Geoff to flick past the goalkeeper.
Mass changes were then made to give everyone a run out. Unfortunately, the number scale of these changes disrupted any rhythm and momentum and sucked all of the creative life out of the Romans. But the defence stood strong to hold on for victory. The back four, led superbly by Kerrigan managed to keep the host forwards at bay to secure the three points.
